Virgin Mobile giving $25 in Google Wallet credits to everyone who activates an LG Optimus Elite

Virgin Mobile is running an interesting promotion to get people to buy their newly-launched LG Optimus Elite. They’re giving $25 of Google Wallet credit to use at participating retailers and shops.

This is no doubt a promotion to highlight the device’s NFC chip and to encourage users to try out mobile payments, a fairly new field of technology for American consumers. You’ll first get $10, and another $15 will show up after three weeks of the device being activated.

If you return the phone before then, you’ll lose out on the full promotion. This ends in July so you have a fair amount of time to take advantage.

Don’t forget that you’ll also get a $35 account bonus good for one month. That specific promotion is for new customers only and it ends on the 30th of this month. Head to Virgin’s site to get started and read on for full press details.

Chrome 19 desktop browser released, keeps tabs with your mobile devices

Chrome Tab Sync

Todays release of the stable version of Google Chrome 19 brings with it a killer feature which really does beg the question -- why would you use any other browser?

When signed in to Chrome 19 on the desktop, as well as Chrome Beta on your Android 4.0 device, all currently open tabs will be synchronized between every device you're signed in on. Put simply, you could be reading Jerry's awesome review of the Sprint Galaxy Nexus on your computer, but you have to leave for work before you're done. Open up Chrome Beta on your Android phone or tablet, and there it is, ready for you to open and get right back to reading.

The tabs are displayed within the "other devices" section found within the main menu on Chrome Beta, and the new tab menu on Chrome desktop.

There are some other new features included in the release of Chrome 19 that are desktop only, but the merging of Chrome on desktop and Android can only be a good thing for the future. Hit the break for Google's promo video.

NSA Launches SE Android for a Secured Mobile Connectivity Experience

wpid nsa se android 02 NSA Launches SE Android for a Secured Mobile Connectivity Experience

It seems like US government agencies have been showing much favoritism over Google’s Android OS in this year alone. First, there’s NASA’s plan to bring Android out of this world and also the news on Pentagon approving Android over Apple.  The latest update today is that the National Security Agency (NSA) has just launched the SE Android, which is actually a security-enhanced version of the OS. The big difference about this OS from a normal Android device is that this provides and enforces a stricter access-control policy.

The new and secured platform was patterned after the agency’s previous research into mandatory access controls that led to the development of the Security-Enhanced Linux project in 2000. The project, SE Linux, led to an array of Linux kernel security modules and other tools capable of giving a flexible mechanism for limiting the resources that users and applications are able to access. A few years later and several of the low-level SE Linux modifications have already been merged along with the official Linux kernel, which were also ported to FreeBSD and Solaris.

Originally, plans of porting the SE Linux to Android was revealed by the NSA in last year’s Linux Security Summit. It was only last January 6 when they finally released the first version called SE Android. The ultimate goal of the SE Android is to improve the application security model of Android, which is also based on a default Linux discretionary access control. With this, an application simply needs to be operated by a user in order to access the files and resources available to him.

The launch of the SE Android will also start enforcing better sandboxing compared to what is currently available in the latest Android versions.

‘Security Enhanced (SE) Android is a project to identify and address critical gaps in the security of Android,’said NSA.

wpid nsa se android NSA Launches SE Android for a Secured Mobile Connectivity Experience

When used, SE Android will isolate individual apps from one another. As a result, it will mitigate problems which have been launched by malicious applications, as well as prevent these apps from gaining access to system resources, perform security checks, and ensure proper permission levels. Each device’s files and folders can now be individually locked and encrypted. Moreover, mobile and WiFi network security features have been improved.

As designed, SE Android would isolate applications from each other, mitigate problems introduced by flawed or malicious applications, prevent applications from accessing system resources, ensure proper permission levels and perform security checks. Every file and folder on the device can be individually locked and encryprted, and WiFi and mobile network security features have been enhanced.

Sadly, it is not as simple and straightforward to install SE Android on devices. This is because SE Android project has not provided pre-compiled builds yet. Instead, users need to download and build the official Android Open Source Project source code before syncing their AOSP clone with the SE Android.

Virgin Mobile getting rid of grandfathered plan options with new smartphone purchases?

Virgin Mobile

A new text message is currently being sent out to Virgin Mobile USA customers with what may be an in important announcement if you're looking towards picking up a new device from them anytime soon.

VMFreeMsg Starting 5/27/12, new smartphones will be subject to current plan rates. This will apply if you switch phones. Go to http://msg4u.us/src for info.

At first glance, it may appear as though Virgin Mobile might be releasing some new smartphone plans, but that's not the case. When you visit the link they're advising folks that anytime you upgrade now you're required to pick from one of the already existing plans available. This looks to imply that if you're on grandfathered plan, they'll no longer allow you to keep it when upgrading to a new device. Anyone else on Virgin Mobile get this message or any further clarification in it?

Thanks, Brian!
